Cross Cultural Communication

In the United States one of the founding values of our country, is that the individual has rights. Another aspect of that individualism is the idea that, "I will look out for myself and you will take care of yourself". There is another worldview which says, "we are a community and we must share our food, private lives, homes and even opinions, to serve the whole". Being aware of this can help with understanding those who think in terms of a group mentality. Here are some ideas to consider about group versus individual identity.

Inividual And Group Identity

Individualism:

  • I am an idividual with my own identity
  • Every person should have an opinion and voice it freely
  • Taking the initiative in a group is good and expected
  • My behavior reflects on me and not the group

    Group Identity:

    • I belong and this is what makes me significant
    • My identity is connected to a group
    • Taking initiative in my group is determined by my role
    • Team members expect direction from the leader
    • My behavior reflects on the whole group
